About Us

Michael Lee and Emily Sunderman, owners of Twig Farm. Twig Farm is owned by Michael Lee and Emily Sunderman. We have been in business since 2005. Our twenty-acre farm is located in West Cornwall, Vermont, about 10 miles south of Middlebury. Michael manages our herd of goats and makes and ages our cheese. Emily manages the business and marketing for Twig Farm and works as an analyst for a publishing company.

Michael makes our cheese by hand using traditional techniques and equipment for farmstead cheese production. Our cheeses age in a temperature and humidity controlled enviornment in our cellar. Michael learned his craft mostly by doing. Prior to making Twig Farm cheese, Michael worked as an apprentice at Peaked Mountain Farm in Townsend, Vermont, and before that was a cheese manager at South End Formaggio in Boston, Massachusetts.

Our Goats

Our herd is comprised of 25 milking does and six kids. Most of our goats are Alpine, though there is one Nubian and a few Saanens.

The goats of Twig Farm.

Our goats are bred in autumn. One hundred fifty days later, we welcome the new kids to the herd and begin milking the does twice a day. When not in the milking parlor, our goats spend their days and nights out on pasture or browsing on our rocky ledges. We love and respect our goats and treat them as valued employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we visit your farm?
Sure! Well, actually it depends. We sell cheese and t-shirts from our farm and always love to meet our customers. That said, in the summer and the fall our schedules are too hectic to accomodate visitors. In general we have more time from January through April to meet with folks. Please call or email before planning a visit.

We're planning to visit your farm, what should we wear?
In the mild weather months there's a good chance of finding poison ivy and wild parsnip. There's always a good chance of encountering mud. So, it is always a good idea to wear rubber boots. If you would like to meet the animals, be sure to wear long pants and socks. Be prepared to wash your shoes in a bleach solution, especially if you have visited other farms.

What beverage do you recommend serving with the Tomme?
Pair the Tomme with a cider from Farnum Hill, with a light white wine from Savoie, or with your favorite beer.

Who took the gorgeous pictures of your cheese?
That would be Eric Zelman of Providence, RI.

How do you pronounce "tomme?"
Tomme rhymes with "Rome."

How can I purchase your cheese wholesale?
Twig Farm cheese is distributed wholesale within New England by Provisions International (800) 281-1933. Outside of New England, Twig Farm cheese is distributed by The Cellars at Jasper Hill.
